18 Christmas alcohol gift ideas to bring the festive cheer

Australians are expect to spend more than $1.5 billion on liquor goods this Christmas, according to a study by IBISWorld.

Based on current prevailing trends, the spending bonanza will undoubtedly include plenty of fine single malt whiskies, top shelf plonk, craft beers and locally made spirits.

But there are plenty of novel and exciting alcohol-related accessories, gadgets and other paraphernalia that may also be worth considering for Christmas gifts.

Decanter's delight

Best known for its sandwich makers, Breville has come to the table with an innovative product for serious wine enthusiasts.

The Breville Sommelier uses 90 per cent pure oxygen to speed up traditional decanting times, allowing you to select your wines just minutes before serving and still enjoy them at their potential.

"One minute of oxygenation in the Sommelier is equivalent to one hour of traditional decanting time, meaning you can enjoy your wines just minutes after opening, rather than waiting hours for traditional decanting methods to take effect," the company says.

On the glassware front, there are options for even the most particular of gift recipients. The new Fatto A Mano glasses from Riedel are sure to be a conversation stopper when gifts are exchanged on Christmas Day, as are the special Gin & Tonic glasses from Spiegelau.

For those who enjoy a fine dram, crystal homeware brand Nachtmann has defied convention with its new Punk whisky set, consisting of a decanter and two tumblers in gunmetal, jet black, copper and ruby colour variations.

Literary value

And fine drinks needn't be about actual consumption. Give the gift of education with a copy of sommelier Chris Morrison's new book, This Is Not A Wine Guide, or Tyson Stelzer's The Champagne Guide 2018-19.

For beer lovers eager to learn more about what's in their glass, you can't go past the new edition of Randy Mosher's essential book, Tasting Beer.
