Kylie slithers down the rich list

By Private Sydney with Andrew Hornery

SURELY it couldn't be true. Kylie Minogue and Russell Crowe, two of our biggest showbiz exports, falling on hard times? In the BRW Top 50 Entertainers' List, to be released tomorrow, Kylie, has crashed from second place to 26th, earning a paltry $4.9 million this year compared with the $47 million she raked in just a year before.

Crowe, who ranked fourth in 2009, when he earned $25 million, has apparently dropped out of the Top 10 completely, taking in just $8.6 million in 2010. But don't expect to see Kylie at your local soup kitchen any time soon, and pray Russell doesn't start busking outside his palatial residence on Woolloomooloo's Finger Wharf. The explanation for their falls lies with their schedules and how BRW ranks entertainers' incomes.

For a pop star like Kylie, touring is where the real money is these days. She was living high off the hog last year, having completed a 49-stop world tour that helped account for her $47 million income for that year. But this year, apart from a few television appearances, she has been quiet. Her 11th album, Aphrodite, was released in July, but the revenue from that won't really be felt until next year.

As for Rusty, his two big recent films, State of Play and Robin Hood, were accounted for in last year's valuation. This year he only has one film, The Next Three Days (which has garnered mixed reviews in the US), hence his drop.

But Crowe has fared better than poor old Anthony LaPaglia, who has dropped off the Top 50 list completely after his US TV show, Without A Trace, was axed after seven seasons.

Making his debut this year is the former Home and Away star Chris Hemsworth at No. 23, earning $5.1 million for his roles in the soon-to-be-released Hollywood blockbusters Thor and Red Dawn. The Melbourne band the Temper Tramp also made the list at No. 40, with earnings of $2.5 million.
