Get more frequent flyer points (without actually flying)

You don't need to fly frequently, or even at all, to rack up a plethora of points with Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Australia Velocity.

Banking, bills, other travel, online shopping and even playing golf are easy ways to grow your points balance on the ground: here's how.

1. Banking, finance and property

Credit cards

Every time you spend becomes a points-earning opportunity – whether on a utility bill or something more enjoyable like dining out, teeing off, buying a new suit or even your next car.

American Express cards usually champion the market with up to 1.5 points per dollar spent on cards from ANZ, CBA, NAB and Westpac, while many Visa and MasterCard products provide up to one point per dollar.

Nifty sign-up deals like 75,000 bonus Qantas points with new ANZ Frequent Flyer Black cards or 100,000 points on Platinum Charge Cards from American Express Australia – convertible to 100,000 Qantas or Velocity points – also bolster your balance.

Other cards

Your airline membership card doubles as a Visa or MasterCard debit card, serving up 0.5 points per dollar in Australia and one point abroad, while Bankwest's Qantas Debit MasterCard pays out five Qantas points per transaction.

Home, car loans

NAB rewards home buyers with 250,000 Velocity points on selected loans above $250,000 – enough for two return flights to London – while Macquarie Bank can churn out 160,000 Qantas points in the first five years of a $500,000 loan.

Finance your next car through Macquarie and you'll also receive one Qantas point per dollar borrowed.

LK Property turns every dollar spent on housing into one Qantas point, which savvy buyers could strategically pair with a points-earning home loan.

Already own your home? Sell through LJ Hooker for 20,000 Qantas points, or have LJ Hooker manage your investment property for an easy 10,000 points.

Setting up a serviced office also lands 20,000 Velocity points from Servcorp, plus three points per dollar on ongoing costs.

Whether your stock rises or falls, you're guaranteed a return of one Qantas point per $3 of brokerage with E*Trade Australia, up to 1000 points per month.

2. The everyday

Paying bills

Lumo Energy's Velocity package lights up 10,000 Velocity points plus six points per dollar spent on electricity and gas.

Or, choose an energy provider through iSelect for up to 2000 Qantas points; switch to Vodafone for up to 15,000 Qantas points; pay bills via MyPost Digital Mailbox at 50 Velocity points a pop, or earn points on various insurance policies through both airlines.

You can even pay rent with your points-earning credit card via Rental Rewards, regardless of whether your agent normally accepts plastic.

Other essentials

Every litre of BP fuel in your tank nets two points; check-ups with Pacific Smiles Dental uncover up to 500 points and sending packages via Sendle delivers one point per dollar with Velocity.

Health and wellbeing

Exchange unwanted kilos for up to 3500 Qantas points at Snap Fitness and a further 100 points every month, or for two Velocity points per dollar with Jetts and a bonus 60 points every month you work out five times or more.

3. Travel

Book through Qantas Hotels or Agoda to collect three points per dollar, or, make use of hotel schemes like Hilton HHonors and Starwood Preferred Guest.

These programs and more give you points with every stay: either on check-out or by converting hotel loyalty points into airline points.

Rent with Avis or Budget to amass four Qantas points per dollar; with Europcar, Hertz or Thrifty for three Velocity points per dollar or get your car serviced at Midas for the same.

Qantas Drive and Brunel Limousines also rev up three points per dollar, while taxi fares booked via the GoCatch smartphone app accumulate one Qantas point per dollar.

You can even earn frequent flyer points as you float when booking cruises via Cruisepilot, Qantas Cruises and Cruiseco covering lines such as P&O, Royal Caribbean and Captain Cook.

4. Online shopping

Fill your cart through the Qantas Points Online Mall or Velocity eStore to earn with hundreds of retailers including Apple, Charles Tyrwhitt, David Jones, Samsung and Sephora.

Joining those: iSubscribe with four Qantas points per dollar and RedBalloon for two Velocity points per dollar. Movie tickets even pull in two Qantas points per dollar when purchased online.

5. Food, wine and recreation

Book your table via Qantas Restaurants for an easy 100 points per diner, or through OpenTable for 300 Velocity points per reservation.

Filling your cellar via Qantas epiQure nets 1-3 points per dollar, or three Velocity points at Virgin Wines and Laithwaite's Wines.

Finishing on the green, Qantas Golf Club offers up to three Qantas points per dollar when booking tee times and more.
