Room with a view yours for only $30m

It is the chance to be the toast of the town. Sydney's priciest penthouse has been listed for sale with expectations of more than $30 million.

The property occupies the entire 11th floor of the Bennelong complex in Macquarie Street directly behind the Opera House.

It has been listed by the retired publican Cyril Maloney and his wife, Margaret, who bought the four-unit holding off the plan in 1999. Mr Maloney paid $13.9 million for the units and converted them into a 715 square metres apartment.

The master bedroom overlooks the Royal Botanic Gardens and Sydney Harbour, with three other bedrooms, two studies, an internal cellar, cool room and billiards rooms.

It has five car spaces.

''It's the best seat in the house. There's nothing that compares,'' said its Raine & Horne listing agent, Michael Pallier.

The once-controversial complex was nicknamed the Toaster because of its shape.

The 90-year-old Mr Maloney, who has been in the pub business for 60 years, commissioned the architect Michael Suttor and the interior designer Michael Love to fit out the property, including the corridor area.

Mr Maloney intends to keep his Bennelong unit on level 12.

The Moran healthcare family owns the rest of that level, after spending $22.4 million for the other three units totalling 577 square metres. The Moran units included a record-setting $16.8 million purchase.

Mr Maloney has been on the Rich 200 list for many years, the bulk of his $394 million wealth coming from his real estate holdings.

Off-the-plan buyers are still being sought for the next priciest offering, a $20 million-plus abode on top of the Liverpool Street block, The Hyde, through Ken Jacobs of Christie's Great Estates.

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment is due to be completed later this year in a 35-storey block.
