Mexican distiller launches $3.5m tequila

A Mexican distiller has presented what it hopes will become the world's most expensive tequila, a platinum and diamond-studded bottle of seven-year-old liquor.

Named "The Diamond Sterling", Hacienda La Capilla's 1.3-litre bottle is made of ceramic, with a 2.3 kilogram layer of platinum and more than 4000 diamonds totaling 328 carats.

Hacienda La Capilla already holds the Guinness record for the most expensive tequila with a bottle that sold for $US225,000 ($229,456) in 1996.

But an official with the Mexico-based company said at a news conference that they hoped their newest creation would fetch $US3.5 million ($3.569 million).

The company is taking the bottle on a tour to various European and Middle Eastern capitals in a bid to interest potential buyers.
