Packer's $22m yacht falls under the radar

At 46 metres long, James Packer's motor yacht, Z Sydney, commands attention wherever it goes.

It is capable of a top speed of 35 knots and has played host to the likes of Sting, Tom Cruise, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. Now the Leopard 46 series yacht is up for sale for a cool $22 million.

The agents appointed to sell the boat, which has been renamed Ares, spruik in their advertising material: ''These sports yachts have a striking presence on the water."

However, under the current settings of Australia's defence radar system, it would not even rate a mention.

The Jindalee Operational Radar Network is only ''expected'' to look for boats the size of the Armidale class patrol boat used by the Australian Navy which is 56 metres long and displaces 270 tonnes.

So Mr Packer's super yacht, which has five bedrooms for up to 12 guests, four crew bedrooms and a large entertainment area, would technically not be detected by the country's biggest defence surveillance system.

Another super yacht recently offloaded by Mr Packer was the Z Ellerston - a luxurious 50-metre Mangusta 165, bought in 2008 and sold last year.

But Mr Packer will not be without a vessel after the sale of the Z-Sydney. He still has the Arctic P, a large 88-metre refitted ocean-going tug, where he and his wife Erica Packer spend wedding anniversaries revisiting the spot they tied the knot, in the Cote d'Azure.
