Perth may be known for its endless beaches and world-class wineries, but the real draw now is a booming hotel and food scene.
Two new boutique hotels, Aloft Perth and Tribe Hotel, opened this month bringing the number of new hotels to in the city over the past year to seven. They join the already well-established COMO The Treasury (voted the second best hotel in the world by Condé Nast) and the new Crown Towers, providing the city with a thrilling range of sleep-over options.
On the food scene, hip new joints, old school faves, and eateries with serious cache are packing in diners. "WA has an abundance of great produce," says Celebrity chef Tobie Puttock. "When I put together the current menu for Tribe Hotel, I definitely took advantage of Mother Nature's seasonal selections, and this along with ethical and healthy eating practices, played a huge part in its direction."
Integrated and modular
Situated in West Perth, Tribe is Australia's first integrated modular design hotel. It boasts 126 prefabricated guest rooms, and like the swanky Alex Hotel in Northbridge, focuses on offering guests an edited hotel experience complete with super-comfortable rooms and shared free-flowing common areas.
"It encourages social interaction through its mix of common space working areas, with a daytime café meets lounge bar by night," says architect and interior designer Travis Walton. "Hotel experiences today need to take guests away from their daily experiences, and transport them to new places and moments in time. It needs to be welcoming and familiar but also inspiring and unique."
The same could be said for Perth. A mecca of cool experiences, here are just some of our favourite spots to sleep, sip and nibble.
The Alex Hotel
Hip and happening, the Alex Hotel sits smack bang in the middle of the city's cultural hub. The rooms are small but well equipped, complete with custom-made beds, Italian sheets and Turkish cotton towels. Hang in the plush communal areas, or check out the views and sip a cocktail or two on the hotel's super-cool rooftop. Perfect for the carefree traveller who likes a little luxury.
Gordon Street Garage
Downtown Perth's original meet-up, wine bar, micro-roaster and unapologetic shrine to all things bready, this is the city's ultimate all day restaurant. Tuck into its signature wood fired pizzas, share dishes and seasonal-inspired cocktails in a surprising setting – a former garage with a backyard garden. Bliss.
The Richardson Hotel and Spa
This is where celebrities bunker down when they stop over in Perth. Contemporary and glamourous, it is super close to the city centre, glorious Kings Park, and Subiaco's sublime restaurant scene.
Ku de Tah
With an impressive Swan River waterfront setting and three fabulous spaces, order up from an exceptionally moreish menu that includes freshly shucked oysters, XO Pipi with smoked bone marrow and chawanmushi, and Lacquered wagin duck.
Shadow Wine Bar and Dining Room
Located at The Alex Hotel, this is where hipsters flock to flirt, hang and sip Negroni. Try the veal carpaccio, Shark Bay crab spaghettini and Mille-feuille. Old school European eating at its best.
With extensive beer and wine offerings, and a menu boasting grilled sardine brioche, devils on horseback, and lavish cheese and charcuterie boards, prepare to linger-long at Freo's hottest hangout.
Wildflower at COMO The Treasury Hotel
For grown-up dining, Wildflower is hard to beat. Its farmer and forager driven menu revolves around the indigenous Noongar calendar that takes its direction from nature. Expect an exquisite dining experience with local produce like Arkady Lamb, Doodkine pork and South West Marron playing starring roles.
Joe's Juice Joint at Northbridge Social
We dare you not to have fun at Perth's coolest dive bar. Complete with pinball machines, 50c chicken wings, and beats from the likes of KISS and Guns n' Roses, just try and choose from the impressive array of craft brews, or keep it simple with a shot and a beer. Rock on.
