Australia's priciest capital... It's not Sydney

Brisbane's skyline. And the prices are sky-high in the Queensland capital, a new review shows.

It may have some of the cheapest coffee and beer in the country, but Brisbane has narrowly edged out Melbourne and Sydney as the most expensive city for Australian holidaymakers.

The Queensland capital recorded the highest average cost of the 10 most common items purchased at hotels, according to Expedia.com.au's Travel Value Tracker index.

Although the price of beer, coffee, water, internet and laundry services in Brisbane were among the lowest in the country, taxi rides from the airport and hotel mini-bar spirits (at $10 a pop) could burn a hole in your wallet.

Melbourne was listed as the second most expensive city, but it's still the place to be if you're after the cheapest coffee, schooner, or hamburger and chips.

A humble cappuccino will only set you back $3.50, the least expensive in Australia, while the average beer is a steal at $5.70.

But the price of getting to your hotel from the airport by taxi is hard to swallow, costing an average $53.35 - the highest in the country and one of the most expensive in the world.

Sydney, meanwhile, is the priciest when it comes to getting a pair of jeans laundered.

The city was listed as the third most costly capital city, closely followed by Perth and Adelaide. Darwin, Canberra and Hobart weren't included in the list.

Prices were calculated using an average charged by three, four and five-star hotels in each city.
